BURGAS 2027 ENTRY PLANNING

Eurovision 2027 visa and entry requirements

Bulgaria is part of the Schengen Area, the Entry/Exit System is already operating and ETIAS is still approaching launch. Your actual requirement depends on nationality, passport and residence status, so this guide explains the decision path without pretending one rule applies to every Eurovision traveller.

Bulgaria is in the Schengen Area

Bulgaria began applying Schengen without internal air and sea border checks on 31 March 2024. Internal land-border checks with and between Bulgaria and Romania were lifted from 1 January 2025.

For travellers subject to the Schengen short-stay limit, time in Bulgaria counts as part of the same 90 days in any 180-day period used across the Schengen Area. A Burgas trip therefore is not a separate 90-day allowance from time already spent elsewhere in Schengen.

Start with the traveller category that actually applies to you

EU, EEA or Swiss citizen

ETIAS and EES are designed around third-country travel and are not the normal entry route for EU citizens or nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Use the official EU travel-document rules that apply to your citizenship and route.

Visa-exempt non-EU traveller

You may currently travel for a short Schengen stay without a visa if your nationality and document qualify for the visa-free regime. ETIAS is intended for visa-exempt travellers in scope once it becomes applicable, so this is the group that most needs to re-check the ETIAS status before May 2027.

Traveller who requires a Schengen visa

ETIAS does not replace a visa. Bulgaria issues uniform Schengen visas, and visa-required travellers should use the official Bulgarian consular process and requirements for their circumstances.

ETIAS: do not buy or apply through unofficial sites yet

As of this guide's current review, the European Union says ETIAS is not yet operational and no applications are being collected. The EU schedules the system to begin in the last quarter of 2026, but the exact date will be announced separately.

Once ETIAS begins, it will be followed by a transitional period of at least six months and then a grace period. That timing matters for Eurovision in May 2027: whether a particular visa-exempt traveller must already hold ETIAS will depend on the actual launch date, the phase in force at travel time and the traveller's own status.

Practical rule: do not pay a third-party website claiming to obtain a Eurovision 2027 ETIAS for you while the official EU system is not accepting applications. Re-check the official EU ETIAS website before departure.

EES is different from ETIAS — and it is already live

The Entry/Exit System (EES) records border-crossing information for many non-EU nationals making short stays at Schengen external borders. The European Commission says EES has been fully operational across all external Schengen crossing points since 10 April 2026.

EES is a border-registration system; ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers in scope. A traveller may encounter EES border procedures even while ETIAS itself is not yet operational.

If you need a Schengen visa

The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Bulgaria issues uniform Schengen visas and applies the common EU visa policy. Its visa guidance also sets document, validity, insurance and application requirements that depend on the case.

Do not copy a fan-site checklist into a visa application. Use the Bulgarian MFA page and the Bulgarian diplomatic/consular channel serving your place of residence for the current document list, timing and appointment route.

What to verify before booking non-refundable travel

  • Your passport or travel document is valid for the rules that apply to your nationality and route.
  • You know whether your nationality is visa-exempt or visa-required for a short Schengen stay.
  • If you are visa-exempt, you have checked the official ETIAS status close enough to travel for the May 2027 phase to be clear.
  • If you need a visa, you understand the application timeline before committing to inflexible flights or accommodation.
  • You account for Schengen days already used if the 90/180-day rule applies to you.
  • You check any separate transit requirements if your route passes through a non-Schengen country or airport.

Entry systems are one of the areas where a 2026 article can become incomplete before a May 2027 trip. Song Contest Radar will update the ETIAS status when the European Commission publishes the exact start date and subsequent implementation phase.

Even after this page is updated, verify your own nationality and document through the official sources below before travel.

Entry requirements FAQ

Is Bulgaria in the Schengen Area?

Yes. Bulgaria joined Schengen for air and sea borders in March 2024, and checks at internal land borders were lifted from 1 January 2025. Short stays in Bulgaria count within the Schengen 90-days-in-any-180-days framework where that rule applies to the traveller.

Will I need ETIAS for Eurovision 2027?

Do not assume the answer yet. The EU says ETIAS is not currently operational and is scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026, with the exact launch date still to be announced. Its launch is followed by transitional and grace periods, so the rules applying in May 2027 depend on the final launch timeline and your nationality/status.

Is ETIAS a visa?

No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers who are in scope once the system applies. Travellers who need a Schengen visa follow the visa process instead.

Is the Entry/Exit System already operating?

Yes. The European Commission says the Entry/Exit System became fully operational across Schengen external border crossing points on 10 April 2026. It changes border registration for many non-EU short-stay travellers; it is separate from ETIAS.

Where should I verify my own visa requirement?

Use official Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Union sources for your nationality, passport and residence status. Airline, social-media or fan-forum summaries should not replace the official rule that applies to your document.
