How appearances are counted
One appearance means one unique Eurovision edition, not one song. That distinction matters for the 1956 Contest, when countries entered two songs. If the same performer has multiple indexed songs in one edition, the year still counts once in the appearances column while the songs column records both entries.
The archive groups performer credits using a normalised version of the artist name. Different historical spellings, renamed groups or changing collaboration credits can therefore remain separate profiles unless the source data credits them consistently. We prefer that transparent rule to speculative identity merging.
