Norway's public broadcaster NRK will not consider songs created entirely with artificial intelligence for Melodi Grand Prix 2027, its national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest.
What to know
- NRK received approximately 1,500 MGP 2027 submissions.
- An estimated 30–50 entries were entirely AI-generated and will not be considered.
- AI-assisted production is not categorically banned; Norway and Sweden have different approaches.
According to comments from project manager Mads Tørklep reported by Norwegian news agency NTB, around 1,500 songs were submitted, including an estimated 30 to 50 tracks made entirely with AI.
Tørklep said the selection team, working with music director Tarjei Strøm, is setting aside submissions that are clearly wholly AI-generated. Some people submitting these tracks have openly disclosed how they were made.
The policy does not prohibit every use of AI. NRK allows tools that assist with inspiration or technical elements of production, while maintaining that a competition entry must fundamentally be a human creative work.
Norway's stance contrasts with Swedish broadcaster SVT, which has not introduced an equivalent ban for Melodifestivalen 2027. The different policies highlight an ongoing debate about AI in Eurovision national selections.
