Italy's Junior Eurovision 2026 representative Matteo Trullu is one of the young performers bringing a rock background to this year's contest in Malta. A new artist profile published by Eurovoix on 13 October highlights the Sardinian singer's path from children's music auditions to national television success. His competition entry is titled 'Che Cos’è l’Amore?', meaning 'What Is Love?'.
What to know
- Matteo Trullu, from Sardinia, won The Voice Kids Italia in February 2026.
- He will sing 'Che Cos’è l’Amore?' for Italy at Junior Eurovision on 24 October.
- His official participant profile lists running-order position 10.
Matteo was born in Cagliari, Sardinia. The official Junior Eurovision biography says he reached the regional audition finals for the Zecchino d'Oro children's festival at the age of four and later sang with the Piccolo Coro di San Sperate. Those early experiences introduced him to organized music-making long before his Eurovision appearance.
His musical tastes moved strongly towards rock. According to the contest's official profile, Matteo became interested in bands including Europe and Twisted Sister, asked for his first electric guitar at six and started vocal lessons the following year. By eleven, he was also learning piano and drums, broadening the skills he can bring to live performances.
His breakthrough came in February 2026, when he won The Voice Kids Italia. Eurovoix reports that he performed Queen's 'Somebody to Love' while accompanying himself on guitar during the competition. The victory raised his national profile and preceded broadcaster RAI's decision to choose him internally for Junior Eurovision.
Matteo will perform 'Che Cos’è l’Amore?', a song credited to composers Fabio Zanolini and Gregorio Castellani, with lyrics by Zanolini, Castellani and Luca Faccini. The official music video was released in September. RAI confirms that Italian viewers can follow the 24 October event on Rai Gulp and RaiPlay, while the official participant page lists Matteo in running-order position 10.
Italy first participated in Junior Eurovision in 2014 and won immediately with Vincenzo Cantiello's 'Tu Primo Grande Amore', also in Malta. That history gives Matteo a notable connection with the host country, but it does not predict his result this year. His upcoming performance will offer the first contest-stage test of how his rock-influenced approach translates to the international audience.
