Netherlands will not compete at Eurovision 2027 after all. On 27 October, Dutch public broadcasting coordinator NPO said it could not find a broadcaster willing to take responsibility for organising the country's entry. The reversal comes just over a month after NPO announced a return to the competition in Burgas, Bulgaria, following the Dutch absence in 2026.
What to know
- NPO says the Netherlands will not enter Eurovision 2027 after no broadcaster agreed to organise a Dutch entry; television coverage may continue.
The decision follows a complex disagreement within Dutch public broadcasting. AVROTROS, the broadcaster previously responsible for the country's Eurovision entry, announced on 24 August that it would not organise a 2027 participation. It argued that the competition had lost its neutrality amid the Gaza war and controversy surrounding Israel's participation, and handed responsibility back to NPO.
On 23 September, NPO publicly announced that the Netherlands would return under a different model: an independent expert team would select and support the artist while NOS would provide television coverage. The European Broadcasting Union welcomed that plan. But discussions with Dutch public broadcasters ultimately failed to produce a broadcaster prepared to take on the entry, prompting the 27 October change of course.
The absence of a Dutch contestant does not mean Dutch viewers lose access to the event. Reporting on the NPO decision indicates that NOS will still cover the semi-finals and final, including Dutch-language commentary. It is important to distinguish broadcasting Eurovision from competing in it: a television channel can show the programme without sending an entry.
For Eurovision 2027, the immediate consequence is that the Netherlands is no longer expected to appear in the competitive line-up. The contest is scheduled for 11 and 13 May (semi-finals) and 15 May (final) in Burgas, Bulgaria. Any later change to the Dutch position would require a new official announcement; NPO's September return statement is superseded by the 27 October decision.
