How direct head-to-head results are compared
When both countries reached the Grand Final in the same year, the lower final place ranks higher. If only one reached the Grand Final, the finalist ranks above the non-qualifier. Two non-qualifiers are compared only when they competed in the same Semi-Final and both Semi-Final places are known.
Entries from different Semi-Finals are deliberately marked not directly comparable because their raw Semi-Final places came from different fields. The unpublished full 1956 ranking is also left unresolved instead of being reconstructed from placeholders.
How the qualification numbers work
Completed Contest appearances exclude the cancelled 2020 edition. Grand Final appearances include every completed pre-Semi-Final Contest through 2003 plus entries that reached or automatically qualified for a Grand Final from 2004 onward.
Semi-Final qualification rate is calculated only from years in which that country actually competed in a Semi-Final. Automatic qualifiers therefore do not artificially raise or lower the rate, and 2020 is never treated as a non-qualification.
How era strength and record positions are calculated
Era profiles group completed appearances and Grand Final appearances by decade, then layer in verified top-10 finishes and official winning years. A country's strongest decade is selected by wins first, then top-10 finishes, Grand Final appearances and completed appearances, so the label follows transparent archive data rather than a subjective score.
Record positions use competition ranking: countries tied on a total share the same position. A zero total is shown without a rank because the corresponding Records Explorer leaderboard only ranks countries with at least one result in that metric.
What this comparison measures
Historical appearance and song counts come from the complete 1956–2026 song archive. Podiums, runner-up finishes, top-10s and victories use the verified results layers. Recent form shows each country's five latest completed indexed Contest editions, while video coverage reports how many indexed songs have an on-site performance video available.
Current-season participation remains separate from broadcaster selection activity so an announced national final is not mistaken for publication of the final EBU participant list.
